Starting Layout

Hello -

We are just starting a new layout. We have 3/4 inch plywood as the base and plan to use layers of 1" foamboard to create the topography. For an HO set, what is the minimum width we need to leave to lay the track properly? Also, do we nail or glue the track down? What references specifically talk about the initial track laying rather than the decoration as we would love to have one handy? Thanks.
